Buddha

There are innumerable Buddhas in the universe. Shakyamuni Buddha was the "historical" Buddha who taught the Dharma on earth. He is generally thought to have lived between 463-383 BCE.
 

Bodhisattva

(i) Any person who is seeking Buddhahood. (ii) A "saint" who stands right on the edge of Nirvana, but remains in this world to help others achieve enlightenment.
 

Bodhi

Enlightenment. Awakening to one's own Buddha nature.
 

Mahayana

One of the two great branches of Buddhism (Theravada being the other). Mahayana Buddhism stresses compassion above asceticism.
 

Pure Land

A Buddha realm. In Mahayana Buddhism, there are countless Buddhas and countless Buddha realms.
 

Sangha

The Buddhist community. All followers of Buddhism. In Chinese, Sangha usually refers only to the Buddhist monks and nuns.
 

Sutra

That which is "threaded together," by extension, the sacred scriptures of Buddhism.
 

Theravada

One of the two great branches of Buddhism (Mahayana being the other). Theravada Buddhism stresses individual enlightenment above all else.
 

Triple Gem

Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha (the Buddha, the Buddha's teaching, and the community of Buddhists)
 

Yogachara

A form of Mahayana Buddhism whose central notion is that everything knowable can only be known through the mind, and thus, everything is "mind only."
 

Zen (Ch'an, "meditation")

One of the most important of the eight schools of Chinese Buddhism. Zen Buddhism generally emphasises enlightenment over ritual practice.
