Fo Guang Shan Melbourne
Fo Guang Shan is the largest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan with over 200-branch temples and institutions spread all over the world. Its primary aim is to promote Humanistic Buddhism. Venerable Master Hsing Yun is the founder of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order. He has been recognised by international leaders for his bold and innovative methods to spread the Buddhist Teachings. There are Fo Guang Shan branches situated in every continent of the globe. Fo Guang Shan Melbourne (literally meaning the Buddha's Light Mountain), also known as the International Buddhist College of Victoria (IBCV), was established in Yarraville in 1992. In addition, it has an art gallery, Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery, located at the heart of Melbourne's CBD at 141, Queen Street and a branch in Box Hill. IBCV provides religious, educational, community, charitable and cultural services to Victorians, Buddhist and non-Buddhist alike. IBCV regularly runs meditation classes, weekly chanting services, and Buddhist Dharma functions and ritual ceremonies during the year. Venerable Abbess Yi Lai heads FGS Melbourne. She is also the head of Fo Guang Shan - Oceania, the Abbess of Nan Tien Temple in Wollongong, NSW and Chung Tian Temple in Queensland and administers two temples located in the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Buddha's Light International Association of Victoria Inc (BLIA VIC)
The Buddha's Light International Association of Victoria (BLIA VIC) is the Victorian Chapter of the worldwide Buddha's Light International Association (BLIA) founded by Venerable Master Hsing Yun. Its membership is made up of lay Buddhist followers. Apart from supporting IBCV to promote Humanistic Buddhism, it is involved in providing community, multi-cultural and personal development services for the well being of its members and the broader community. BLIA currently has over 170 regional chapters and thousands of branches all over the world with millions of members. The Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC), at its Substantive Session of July 2003, granted a special consultative status to BLIA, as a Non-Governmental Organization of the United Nations. Also in December 2003, another UN's major agency, Department of Public Information (DPI), also granted the NGO association status to BLIA. The membership of BLIA VIC is of diverse ethnic, cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Members and volunteers carry out all services and activities. There are no paid staff within the organisation. It is run by an Executive Committee and guided by monastic advisors from Fo Guang Shan Melbourne. Since 1996, BLIA VIC has been highly active in celebrating cultural diversity and interfaith dialogue in Victoria . Annual events have included the forthcoming Buddha's Day and Multicultural Festival held in Federation Square on the 17th & 18th of May 2008; participation in the Moomba Water Festival and Clean up Australia Day.
